A violin by Laberte-Humbert | Chipot Vuillaume.

The Chipot-Vuillaume family was a distinguished family of luthiers from Mirecourt, who collaborated with several renowned French makers, including Derazey, Charles J.B. Collin-Mezin, and A. Deblaye. Their instruments are noted for their high-quality craftsmanship and careful selection of wood. The family’s brand was later acquired by the Laberte atelier and distributed through the Laberte-Humbert firm.

An interesting aspect of their history concerns the label used by Chipot-Vuillaume, which often included the phrase “Gendre de J.B. Vuillaume,” meaning “son-in-law of J.B. Vuillaume.” J.B. Vuillaume was one of the most celebrated and internationally recognized violin makers. However, although Chipot married a woman named Stella Vuillaume, she was not the daughter of the famous J.B. Vuillaume. Despite this, the resulting confusion became widespread, and even some violin experts of the past incorrectly stated in their guidebooks that Chipot-Vuillaume was directly related to the renowned maker.
