Marc Laberte (1880–1963) was a distinguished French luthier who directed the Laberte-Humbert Frères firm in Mirecourt, one of the principal centers of violin making in France. His workshop produced a wide range of instruments, from high-quality models intended for professional soloists to more commercially manufactured pieces. The superior models bore the label “Fait sous la direction de Marc Laberte / Maître luthier,” meaning “Made under the direction of Marc Laberte / Master Luthier.”Laberte developed his expertise through the study of an extensive personal collection of fine classical instruments. He promoted refined copies characterized by high-quality transparent varnish, often finished in shaded or antiqued styles. The firm remained under family control, passing to his son Philippe, who managed the business until 1968.This violin is based on a Stradivari “Lady Blunt” model from Stradivari’s “Late Golden Period.”
