A violin by Paoli Luigi.

Luigi Paoli (1908 – 1983) was an Italian violin maker of Corsican origin, born in Bastia, Corsica. Although never associated with one of the major Italian violin-making schools, he developed a highly individual approach to the craft, combining traditional methods with extensive self-directed research into violin acoustics, construction and varnish preparation.

According to family testimony, Paoli received his initial training in a small violin-making workshop, possibly in Bastia or later in Naples. Much of his subsequent development, however, was self-taught. He devoted considerable effort to studying the mathematical principles underlying violin construction, producing his own technical drawings, geometric calculations, and experimental designs in pursuit of tonal refinement.

During his career Paoli lived successively in Naples, Trieste, and in Bergamo (since 1964), where he spent the remainder of his life.

In addition to making instruments, Paoli collaborated with the Museo del Violino in Cremona on the restoration of an antique lute, demonstrating his competence as both a maker and restorer.
